Curcumin gel for breast-cancer radiation skin irritation Original paper
In this 4-week randomized controlled trial in 52 women who were receiving breast-cancer radiation, use of a topical 2% curcumin gel resulted in less skin redness, irritation, and pain, compared to a placebo.
This Study Summary was published on June 10, 2025.
The study
The participants applied either the curcumin or placebo gel twice daily during radiation therapy. By the end of the first week, only 11% of curcumin users had breast redness, compared to 64% in the placebo group.
After 4 weeks, the curcumin group had lower rates of skin irritation (62.9% vs 84%), pain (29.6% vs 72%), and skin redness (92.6% vs 100%) than the placebo group.
The gel did not affect skin itching or dryness. No participants stopped using the gel due to side effects.
