The study

The researchers examined data from 895 total participants in a randomized crossover study, a randomized controlled trial (RCT), 2 before-and-after studies, and a 1995 review of 5 RCTs.

The participants took tablets containing 30 to 42 mg of quail egg homogenate and 0.53 to 0.75 mg of zinc. In all the studies except one of the before-and-after studies, the participants took 1 to 2 tablets per day for 7 to 450 days.

The researchers measured outcomes such as nasal congestion, itchy nose and eyes, sneezing, nasal inspiratory flow, total nasal symptom score, and medication usage. Most of the outcomes were improved with the intervention compared to a placebo (except in the before-and-after studies, in which the comparisons were to baseline). However, immunoglobulin E levels were not improved in 2 of 2 studies.
