The study

The participants took probiotics or synbiotics for 4 to 48 weeks. The control groups received either a placebo, usual care, or other microbiome therapies.

  • Probiotics reduced alanine aminotransferase (ALT) by 5.1 U/L and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) by 7.8 U/L.
  • Synbiotics reduced ALT by 7.4 U/L and AST by 13.3 U/L.
  • Both interventions also improved insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).
  • Synbiotics improved liver stiffness by 1.00 kPa, and probiotics improved it by 0.37 kPa.
  • Only synbiotics improved liver fat.
  • Only probiotics lowered BMI.
