This Study Summary was published on April 17, 2025.

The study

The studies included 684 participants (a majority men) with hair loss and ranged from 2 to 6 months in duration.

Four studies (2 randomized controlled trials, 2 noncontrolled trials) tested caffeine alone, and 5 studies (2 randomized controlled trials, 3 noncontrolled trials) tested caffeine combined with other active ingredients (e.g., zinc PCA, adenosine, plant extracts).

All 9 studies reported that topical caffeine improved hair growth, by increasing the number of hairs and/or hair thickness.

The quality of evidence was rated as medium for 3 studies, low for 1 study, and very low for 5 studies.
