In this randomized controlled trial in 400 children, daily honey consumption for 7 days after tonsillectomy did not reduce pain or improve recovery.

The study

The participants received 5 mL of Manuka honey, 5 mL of Marri honey, a placebo (sugar syrup), or standard care alone.

All of the participants received standard care, which included pain-relieving medications. Although the intervention called for 6 doses of honey a day, the average number of doses taken ranged from 2 to 3 doses a day.
