In this meta-analysis of 12 randomized controlled trials in 792 men and women (average ages of 50–65) with advanced chronic kidney disease, psychosocial interventions reduced depression symptoms.

The study
The psychosocial interventions included cognitive behavioral therapy, Quran recitation therapy, cognitive existential therapy, watching a movie during dialysis, empowerment training, and breathing training. In the vast majority of the trials, the comparator was routine care. The intervention durations ranged from 4 weeks to 1 year.
Compared to the control, psychosocial interventions reduced depression symptoms with a small effect size, with moderate certainty. No effect on quality of life was observed.
