Curcumin and/or HIIT may improve blood lipids in women with obesity Original paper
In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 40 sedentary women (ages 30–35) with obesity, supplementation with curcumin, high-intensity interval training (HIIT), and the combination of the two increased serum irisin and improved blood lipid profiles.
This Study Summary was published on June 13, 2025.
The study
The participants were assigned to 1 of 4 groups:
- Curcumin (80 milligrams of nanomicelle curcumin daily)
- Curcumin + exercise (curcumin + 4 times per week of HIIT)
- Placebo
- Placebo + exercise
Compared to the placebo, all the active interventions (curcumin, curcumin plus exercise, and placebo plus exercise) increased (improved) irisin levels and improved blood lipids (total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglycerides). It’s unclear whether the researchers compared the active interventions to one another.
