The study

The participants (average age of 65) were assigned to weekly 90-minute meditation sessions, weekly 90-minute yoga sessions, or a waitlist control group. The meditation and yoga sessions were delivered at local community centers. Follow-up tests were performed at 2 months and 6 months postintervention.

At 2 months, both meditation and yoga led to greater improvements in anxiety symptoms, motor functioning, and quality of life, compared to the control. Reductions in depression symptoms were observed in the meditation group at the 2-month mark as well. By 6 months, both interventions lowered levels of interleukin 6, an inflammatory marker.
