A multi-ingredient supplement may improve tonsillitis symptoms in children with tonsillopharyngitis Original paper
In this unblinded 6-day randomized controlled trial in 129 children (ages 3–10) with short-term tonsillopharyngitis, adding a multi-ingredient oral solution to standard care improved symptoms slightly more than standard care alone.
This Study Summary was published on June 12, 2025.
The study
Per 100 milliliters, the solution provided 133.3 milligrams of Pelargonium sidoides extract, 13.3 milligrams of zinc, 7.7 milligrams of propolis extract, and 5.5 grams of honey. Children under age 6 took 30 milliliters of the supplement daily, and children over 6 took 45 milliliters daily.
Adding the oral solution to standard care reduced tonsillopharyngitis symptom severity (the primary outcome) more than standard care alone, but the difference between the groups did not reach the estimated minimal clinically significant difference of 2 points. Both the participants and the researchers rated the effectiveness of therapy higher in the supplement group.
The trial was funded by the manufacturer of the oral solution, and 2 of the researchers were employed by the manufacturer when they conducted the trial.
