The study

The 46 participants were assigned to 1 of 2 intervention groups:

  • Group 1 took 1 gram of L-carnitine tartrate, 100 million CFU of multistrain/multispecies probiotics, and 175 milligrams of fructo-oligosaccharides daily for 8 weeks.
  • Group 2 took 1 gram of L-carnitine tartrate and a placebo daily for 8 weeks.

Taking L-carnitine plus synbiotics (vs. L-carnitine alone) produced the following results:

  • Improved atherogenic index of plasma (the primary outcome; based on the ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol)
  • Improved lipoprotein combine index
  • Improved body composition parameters (e.g., body fat, visceral fat, and waist-to-height ratio)
  • Reduced appetite markers (fullness and desire to eat).
