Synbiotics and L-carnitine may improve body composition and atherogenic indexes in women with obesity Original paper
In this randomized controlled trial in women who had obesity (but otherwise metabolically healthy), taking synbiotics and L-carnitine improved body composition, atherogenic indexes (blood lipid ratios associated with cardiovascular disease), and appetite more than L-carnitine alone.

The study
The 46 participants were assigned to 1 of 2 intervention groups:
- Group 1 took 1 gram of L-carnitine tartrate, 100 million CFU of multistrain/multispecies probiotics, and 175 milligrams of fructo-oligosaccharides daily for 8 weeks.
- Group 2 took 1 gram of L-carnitine tartrate and a placebo daily for 8 weeks.
Taking L-carnitine plus synbiotics (vs. L-carnitine alone) produced the following results:
- Improved atherogenic index of plasma (the primary outcome; based on the ratio of triglycerides to HDL cholesterol)
- Improved lipoprotein combine index
- Improved body composition parameters (e.g., body fat, visceral fat, and waist-to-height ratio)
- Reduced appetite markers (fullness and desire to eat).
