Does an avocado a day keep cardiovascular risk at bay? Original paper
In this 26-week randomized controlled trial in 806 participants with abdominal obesity, eating 1 avocado daily did not affect a measure of cardiovascular health.
This Study Summary was published on April 23, 2025.
The study
The researchers gave the participants in the intervention group avocados and instructed them to eat 1 (approximately 168 grams) daily, whereas the researchers instructed the control group not to eat more than 2 avocados per month.
The trial compared Life’s Essential 8 scores — a cardiovascular health metric based on 4 health factors (blood glucose, blood lipids, blood pressure, and body weight) and 4 behaviors (adequate physical activity, healthy diet, sleep, and avoidance of nicotine).
Changes in the participants’ Life’s Essential 8 scores did not differ between the groups.
