Can probiotics or synbiotics help in the treatment of cystic fibrosis? Original paper
In this meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials, supplementation with either probiotics or synbiotics did not improve lung function or pulmonary exacerbations in participants with cystic fibrosis.
This Study Summary was published on June 12, 2025.
The study
A total of 552 participants with cystic fibrosis were included in this review, and most studies focused on children. The treatment duration of the included studies ranged from 1 month to 12 months. Probiotics were given in 9 studies, and synbiotics were given in 4 studies, mainly from Lactobacillus and/or Bifidobacterium genera.
According to the meta-analysis, taking either probiotics or synbiotics had no effect on lung function or pulmonary exacerbations (periods of worsening respiratory symptoms).
A majority of the trials had an unclear risk of bias.
