Magnesium sulfate for pain after lumbar spinal surgery Original paper

In this systematic review of 4 randomized controlled trials in 225 adults who were undergoing lumbar spinal surgery, there was preliminary evidence for the use of magnesium sulfate to reduce postoperative use of pain medication.

This Study Summary was published on April 4, 2025.

The study

The magnesium sulfate doses ranged from 5 to 500 milligrams per kilogram of body weight. It was administered in various ways, including intravenously and intramuscularly. Three of the studies compared magnesium to a placebo, and 1 study compared it to a sedative medication.

Medication was requested later and/or used less in the magnesium groups than the placebo for 2 of the 3 studies. Less medication was used by the sedative group than the magnesium group.

Pain was evaluated for 24 hours after surgery, and pain scores were generally the same between the groups across the 4 studies.

The risk of bias was low in 2 studies and unclear in 2 studies.
