Supplementary calcium may prevent hypertension during pregnancy Original paper
In this meta-analysis of 21 randomized controlled trials in 39,270 pregnant women who were at risk of gestational hypertension, taking calcium reduced the risk of preeclampsia and pregnancy-induced hypertension.
This Study Summary was published on March 25, 2025.
The study
The daily dose of supplementary calcium ranged from 500 to 2,000 milligrams.
Calcium reduced the risk of preeclampsia by 39% and pregnancy-induced hypertension by 13%, compared with the control. The researchers did not observe any effect of calcium on the risk of hemolysis, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count (HELLP) syndrome, premature birth, or maternal mortality.
The risk of bias was low in 5 trials, unclear in 7 trials, and high in 9 trials.
