Mixed results for CoQ10 as an add-on treatment for gum disease Original paper
In this systematic review of 10 randomized controlled trials, topical application of coenzyme Q10 showed no benefits for 2 gum health outcomes, whereas oral supplementation with 120 milligrams per day for 12 weeks improved both outcomes.
This Study Summary was published on April 4, 2025.
The study
CoQ10 was delivered in 2 ways. In 4 trials, it was applied directly into the gum pockets via a topical gel after standard gum treatment procedures. In 6 trials, the participants received standard treatment but also took oral capsules — most commonly 120 milligrams daily for 12 weeks.
Topical application did not change probing pocket depth (the space between the gum and tooth) or clinical attachment level (how well a tooth is anchored).
Oral supplementation with CoQ10 led to an improvement in both of these gum health outcomes.
