Can an antioxidant-rich diet improve asthma symptoms in children? Original paper

In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 80 children with mild to moderate asthma, adding antioxidant-rich fruit juices to standard asthma care improved asthma symptoms and quality of life.

The study

Children (ages 4–15) with mild to moderate asthma were recruited from 2 primary care facilities in southern Thailand. The participants in the control group received usual asthma care. The participants in the intervention group received usual asthma care plus 100 mL per day of antioxidant-rich tomato juice and mixed-fruit juice.

Asthma control scores and quality of life measures improved in the intervention group. There were no differences in inhaled corticosteroid usage, pulmonary function, or serum lycopene and vitamin C levels between the 2 groups (which suggests that these 2 antioxidants were not responsible for the observed benefits).
