Does Lactobacillus helveticus GCL1815 reduce common cold symptoms? Original paper
In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 192 adults in Japan without known health conditions, supplementing with the probiotic Lactobacillus helveticus GCL1815 reduced common cold symptoms.
This Study Summary was published on April 1, 2025.
The study
The participants took one capsule daily, which contained either 6 billion heat-sterilized Lactobacillus helveticus GCL1815 cells or a placebo. Fourteen common cold symptoms were assessed daily using a questionnaire.
The cumulative incidence of common cold symptoms was lower in the probiotic group than the placebo group (938 vs. 1,116 days). For specific symptoms, there were fewer instances of fever, fatigue, tiredness, runny nose, nasal congestion, and phlegm in the probiotic group, but there were more instances of chills in the probiotic group.
Four of the researchers reported a conflict of interest due to their employment by Ezaki Glico Co., Ltd., which supplied test samples used in the trial.
