The study

This study examined the relationship between diet, sleep, aging, and depression. The participants completed questionnaires to determine their chronotype, depression symptoms, and Mediterranean diet adherence. To estimate biological aging, blood samples were analyzed using a specialized DNA test.

Overall, having a morning chronotype and adhering to a Mediterranean diet were each independently correlated with fewer depression symptoms, whereas an evening chronotype and low adherence were each correlated with more symptoms.

Women had a higher prevalence of depression than men, and their depressive symptoms were correlated with faster biological aging, even after adjusting for diet and chronotype.
