The benefits of intermittent fasting in women with rheumatoid arthritis Original paper
In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 44 postmenopausal women with overweight and rheumatoid arthritis, a 16:8 intermittent fasting diet improved liver enzymes and oxidative stress biomarkers compared to a control diet.

The study
The participants were randomized to either a 16:8 intermittent fasting group (fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window) or a control group that maintained their usual diet with general healthy eating advice. Both groups stayed on their regular rheumatoid arthritis medications throughout the study.
By the end of the trial, the intermittent fasting group had improved levels of oxidative stress biomarkers, including catalase and malondialdehyde, and the liver enzymes AST and ALT.
However, none of the other eight measured parameters — including markers like nitric oxide, myeloperoxidase, and total antioxidant capacity — showed statistically significant differences between the groups.
