In this systematic review of 9 cross-sectional studies in 4,569 participants, one-third reported experiencing skin problems like acne, redness, itching, and irritation after using cosmetics and personal-care products.

The study

Of the participants who reported side effects, acne affected 36% of users, skin redness affected 27%, itching affected 19%, and general irritation affected 18%.

“Leave-on” products such as face creams, lotions, and hair dyes and how frequently these products were used increased the chance of skin problems more than "rinse off" products like shampoo.

Fragrances, certain preservatives, and synthetic colorants were most often associated with skin reactions.
