The study

In the RCTs that involved participants who were diagnosed with depression, switching to a higher-quality diet for 1.5 weeks to 3 years reduced depression symptoms with a small effect size, compared to control groups who generally ate their usual diet or received social support. However, no benefit was found in the trials that aimed to prevent depression.

In observational studies, a Mediterranean diet was associated with a 9% lower odds of self-reported depression symptoms, Western diets with a 20% increase, and fast food with a 46% increase.

A higher fruit intake was associated with an 11% lower odds of depression symptoms. Higher intakes of fish and omega-3 fatty acids were each associated with 16% lower odds of depression symptoms in participants with postpartum depression.
