The study

During the trial, the participants were given 125 mL per day of either a probiotic yogurt drink or a nonfermented dairy drink. The probiotic yogurt contained Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus yoba 2012 and Streptococcus thermophilus C106.

There was no difference in frequency of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms between the 2 groups. However, the participants who drank the probiotic yogurt experienced greater reductions in their symptoms over time, which suggests that the yogurt might have reduced symptom frequency if the study lasted longer. The probiotic yogurt group also had higher levels of probiotic gut bacteria, increased total bacteria in stool samples, and more protective immune protein in saliva samples.

Several authors were employees or co-founders of the Yoba for Life Foundation, which manufactures one of the probiotics used in this study; the trial was also partly funded by the foundation.
