The association between an inflammatory diet and cancer survival Original paper

In this prospective cohort study in 3,507 participants with cancer in the United States, a less inflammatory diet was associated with a lower mortality risk.

This Study Summary was published on June 11, 2025.

The study

The study assessed dietary intake using two 24-hour dietary recalls. Scores were calculated using the Dietary Inflammatory Index (a higher score is worse) and the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index (a higher score is better). The median follow-up duration was approximately 8 years.

The dose-response relationship was proportional: the higher the Dietary Inflammatory Index score, the higher the mortality risk, and the higher the Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index score, the lower the mortality risk.

The highest Composite Dietary Antioxidant Index scores were associated with a 34% lower mortality risk than the lowest scores, and the highest Dietary Inflammatory Index scores were associated with a 114% higher mortality risk than the lowest scores.
