Pain is an unpleasant signal from the nervous system that indicates potential issues; it is characterized by sensations such as prick, sting, burn, or ache and can vary in intensity and duration. The International Association for the Study of Pain defines it as an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience related to actual or potential tissue damage.
Although there is no strong evidence that directly associates diet with pain severity, some hypotheses suggest that transitioning from a Western diet to one rich in anti-inflammatory foods, as well as consuming prebiotics and probiotics, may help alleviate chronic and gastrointestinal pain.
Supplements for pain relief vary based on the underlying condition; for osteoarthritis, glucosamine, chondroitin, curcumin, ginger, and omega-3 fatty acids are notable, whereas for cancer and other pain types, cannabidiol, cannabis, and willow bark are of interest.
