Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that starts in early childhood and is marked by challenges in social communication and interaction, as well as repetitive behaviors and interests.
The main signs and symptoms of autism spectrum disorder include difficulties with social communication and repetitive behaviors, and may involve issues such as delayed language and cognitive development, inability to maintain eye contact, and intense interests in specific topics. Additional symptoms can include seizures, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and sleep problems.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is typically diagnosed through screenings recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics at 18 and 24 months, during which healthcare providers use questionnaires, clinical observations, and cognitive tests. The specific testing methods and diagnosis are determined at the healthcare provider's discretion.
There are no standard treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) because it affects individuals differently, so treatments are customized to meet individual needs. Common approaches include behavior management programs, cognitive behavioral therapy, occupational therapy, neurofeedback, and symptom-specific medications.
Several dietary supplements — including omega-3 fatty acids, melatonin, vitamin D, and a combination of vitamin B6 and magnesium — have been studied for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Although omega-3 supplementation shows little evidence of effectiveness and vitamin B6 and magnesium have conflicting results, vitamin D supplementation shows promise, and melatonin may improve sleep and daytime behavior.
Caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often consider dietary approaches like gluten-free, casein-free diets and the specific carbohydrate diet, but evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited. Additionally, food selectivity in ASD highlights the importance of consulting with healthcare professionals to ensure proper nutrition.
The FDA cautions against various products and therapies marketed for autism treatment, such as chelation therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, because they may be potentially dangerous. It is advisable to consult a healthcare provider before considering any alternative treatments.
Autism is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, though the exact interactions between these influences is not fully understood and may differ among individuals.
