What was studied?
The effect of a mastication (chewing) intervention on body composition and cardiometabolic risk factors in participants with obesity.
The outcomes assessed were BMI, body weight, total body fat, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, liver enzymes (i.e., ALT, AST, and GGT), HbA1c, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C).
Background
The speed at which one eats is associated with body composition. Slow eating may increase diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) or the rate at which energy expenditure increases above fasting levels. It is unclear whether oral stimuli (the duration of tasting or chewing) influences DIT.
