Background
Executive function skills include attentional control (choosing what to pay attention to and ignore), cognitive inhibition (the ability to tune out irrelevant stimuli), inhibitory control (responding with attention and reasoning), working memory (the ability to briefly hold new information), and cognitive flexibility (the ability to switch between tasks), which are necessary skills that contribute to successfully attaining chosen goals. Exercise has been shown to improve executive function skills in neurotypical children, but few studies have reported the effects of exercise interventions on these skills in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
