Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a collection of herbs, fungi, or berries that have historical usage as medicine in mainland China and sometimes nearby areas.
Although their effects are normally based on anecdotes, they are slowly being scientifically validated for their claims.
Last Updated:October 13, 2024
Traditional Chinese Medicine, at least as far as Examine.com is concerned, is a collection of nutraceuticals and plants that have traditionally been used for treating diseases or otherwise enhancing quality of life in China and surrounding regions.
In the ages before HPLC-MS analysis and identifying active components, looking at enzymatic interactions with xenobiotics, and assigning these pharmaceutical sounding terms to everything there was still nutraceutical research. This page is devoted to validating the effects of Chinese Medicine using western (peer-reviewed) science and categorizing the herbal combinations that have been traditionally used.
If primary sources are not given for claims, but the claims have been made via traditional practitioners of Chinese Medicine, it is sort of a grey area as far as Examine.com is concerned.

In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 122 men (average age of 32) with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, supplementation with Hongjing I granule (HJIG) improved erectile function.
Quick Summary
In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 122 men (average age of 32) with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, supplementation with Hongjing I granule (HJIG) improved erectile function.
The study
HJIG is a traditional Chinese medicine formulation composed of 9 herbal ingredients, including Rhodiola rosea root, astragalus root, white peony root, and goji berries.
Erectile function was assessed using the erectile function domain of the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) questionnaire and the Sexual Encounter Profile (SEP) tool.
The IIEF score improved more in the HJIG group (+7.8 points) than in the placebo group (+3.3 points), whereas the improvement in the SEP score was similar between the groups (+0.5 points in both groups).
The results
Although the findings are promising, larger trials with longer follow-up periods are necessary to confirm the potential beneficial benefits of HJIG for improving erectile function.

What was studied?
The effect of traditional Chinese herbal medicine on clinical outcomes in the context of infant feeding intolerance (trouble digesting food).
The primary outcomes were the time to achieve full enteral feeding (feeding through the digestive tract), duration of feeding intolerance, and total effective rate. The secondary outcomes were the time to start gaining weight, time to resolution of abdominal distension (swelling of the abdomen), time to resolution of gastric retention (food remaining in the stomach longer than normal), and time to cessation of vomiting.

What was studied?
The effect of total flavonoids from Rhizoma Drynariae — an herb commonly used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — on biomarkers of bone metabolism in people with osteoporosis.
The primary outcomes included biomarkers of bone formation, such as bone gla protein (BGP) and type I procollagen-N-propeptide (PINP). The secondary outcomes included tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP; a biomarker of bone breakdown) and other biomarkers such as alkaline phosphatase (a biomarker of bone health that can also indicate increased bone formation).
