Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP, B-type natriuretic peptide) is a protein produced by the heart and blood vessels that is commonly used as a diagnostic biomarker for heart failure. BNP release is triggered in response to cardiac stress and has several biological functions that work to counter the effects of heart failure.
