Congenital heart defect risk
•Last Updated: October 13, 2024
Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common type of birth disorder and occur when the heart fails to develop normally during pregnancy. CHDs can affect the valves or walls of the heart or the blood vessels that carry blood to and from the heart. Some CHDs resolve on their own without intervention, while others can be life-threatening and may require surgery. CHD risk refers to the likelihood of having a pregnancy affected by a CHD.[1]
