Quick Summary
In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 102 women in Iran with endometriosis, supplementing with chamomile extract or flaxseed oil reduced the severity of pelvic pain, dyspareunia, and dysmenorrhea symptoms.
The study
The participants (ages 20–45) were diagnosed with grade 1 or 2 endometriosis but did not have pelvic inflammatory disease, autoimmune conditions, or metabolic disorders. They continued their usual endometriosis treatments throughout the study.
The participants took capsules containing chamomile extract (9 grams/day), flaxseed oil (6 grams/day), or a placebo. Both extracts were produced using ethanol extraction.
Chamomile and flaxseed oil both reduced peak symptom severity (pelvic pain, dysmenorrhea, and dyspareunia), compared to the placebo, based on visual analog scale ratings. The reductions were greater in the chamomile group than in the flaxseed group.
The results
Chamomile and flaxseed contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and (in flaxseed specifically) omega-3 fatty acids, which may contribute to the management of endometriosis.[1][2] Chamomile extract has been well tolerated in other studies, but the 9-gram daily dose used here was relatively high.[3] Longer-term studies with adverse effect monitoring are needed to confirm its safety and efficacy over extended use.
