In this randomized controlled trial, supplementation with resveratrol improved oxidative stress and mitochondrial biomarkers, but not most fertility outcomes, in women with polycystic ovary syndrome who were undergoing in vitro fertilization.
What was studied?
Whether resveratrol improved outcomes in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
The primary outcome was total antioxidant capacity in follicular fluid. The secondary outcomes were other oxidative stress markers (total oxidant status and the oxidative stress index) in follicular fluid, 7 mitochondrial outcomes (e.g., intracellular adenosine triphosphate levels), and 9 fertility outcomes (e.g., egg maturity rate, how often high-quality embryos occurred, chemical pregnancy rates, clinical pregnancy rates).
Who was studied?
48 adult women (ages 18–35; average BMI of 26) in Tehran, Iran, who were diagnosed with PCOS and were undergoing in vitro fertilization.
The women had an average duration of infertility of 5.17 years.
How was it studied?
In this 60-day randomized controlled trial, the participants were given resveratrol (800 mg/day of 99% pure transresveratrol) or a placebo.
What were the results?
Compared to the placebo group, each oxidative stress marker was improved in the resveratrol group.
Compared to the placebo group, 6 of 7 mitochondrial outcomes and 2 of 9 fertility outcomes (egg maturity rate, high-quality embryo rate) were improved in the resveratrol group.
Anything else I need to know?
The researchers assessed many outcomes without adjusting for multiple comparisons, which increases the likelihood of false-positive findings.
