Muscle oxygenation is the rate of oxygen usage and supply to a working muscle tissue. This is usually tied in with nitric oxide metabolism, and increased muscle oxygenation should lead to increased anaerobic muscle performance.

In this randomized controlled trial in older adults, curcumin improved muscle oxygen resaturation after exercise.
What was studied?
The effects of curcumin on muscle oxygen saturation in older adults.
The primary outcomes were changes in muscle oxygen saturation during exercise and recovery, as measured using near-infrared spectroscopy. Serum levels of nitrates and nitrites were also assessed.
Who was studied?
10 older adults (average age of 67; 6 men, 4 women) in Brazil.
All of the participants were sedentary and had risk factors for cardiovascular disease (high blood pressure and/or high fasting glucose). None of the participants were current smokers, and individuals with lung disease, liver disease, or kidney failure were excluded.
How was it studied?
In this randomized crossover trial, the participants took 10 grams of turmeric root extract (95% curcuminoids) or corn starch (placebo), dissolved in water, 2 hours before testing.
During testing, the participants performed handgrip exercises at a rate of 120 contractions per minute. The exercise was repeated until the participants were unable to maintain the prescribed pace or range of motion.
What were the results?
Curcumin increased the amount of oxygen desaturation during exercise and increased the rate of oxygen resaturation during recovery. This suggests that oxygen was expended more completely during exercise after curcumin supplementation and was restored faster during recovery. However, no differences in exercise performance (time until fatigue) were observed between the curcumin and placebo conditions.
Levels of nitrites (but not nitrates) were higher after curcumin supplementation, compared to placebo.
