Cannabis use and the risk of asthma Original paper

In this meta-analysis of 8 observational studies in 389,311 adolescents and adults, cannabis use was associated with a higher risk of asthma.

This Study Summary was published on April 22, 2025.

The study

All of the studies were conducted in the United States. Six of the studies were cross-sectional, and 2 were cohort studies.

Cannabis use — mainly via inhalation — was self-reported. The primary outcome was the diagnosis of asthma assessed by clinical examination or self-reporting.

Cannabis users had 31% greater odds of having asthma compared to nonusers. Moderate heterogeneity was observed.

All of the studies adjusted for certain confounding factors, like age, sex, or cigarette use, and had some concerns related to risk of bias.
