Brains, planes, and automobiles: The association between transportation jobs and Alzheimer's disease Original paper

In this cross-sectional study, taxi drivers and ambulance drivers had the lowest odds of Alzheimer’s disease mortality out of 443 occupations examined. This finding might be attributable to the neurocognitive demands of these jobs, but more research is needed.

The study

This study used the death certificates of 8,972,221 people from all 50 U.S. states who died between 2020 and 2022 and had an occupation documented. Using this data, the investigators determined which occupations had the lowest odds of death due to Alzheimer’s disease, meaning that Alzheimer’s disease was documented as a contributing cause of death.

After adjustment for potential confounders (age at death, sex, ethnicity, and education), the 2 occupations with the lowest odds of dying from Alzheimer’s disease were taxi drivers and ambulance drivers.

In contrast, bus drivers, aircraft pilots, nor ship captains had appreciably lower odds of Alzheimer’s disease mortality.
