Clearing the gut to ease the liver: Can Helicobacter pylori eradication help with fatty liver disease? Original paper
In this meta-analysisof 4 randomized controlled trials in 453 participants with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), combining lifestyle changes with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication therapy improved liver fibrosis and TNF-alpha levels more than lifestyle changes alone.
This Study Summary was published on April 17, 2025.
The study
The participants received either H. pylori eradication therapy or no treatment for 1 to 12 months. Both groups received counseling on physical exercise and diet.
Adding H. pylori eradication therapy to lifestyle changes led to greater reductions in liver fibrosis and the inflammatory marker TNF-alpha, compared to lifestyle changes alone.
However, there were no differences in liver enzymes, body weight, BMI, waist circumference, fasting blood glucose, and insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).
The quality of the evidence was rated as high.
