Meal frequency and appetite: Do more meals mean less hunger? Original paper

In this 21-day randomized crossover trial in 50 participants, appetite was not influenced by different meal frequencies, and mixed results were reported for appetite-related hormones.

This Study Summary was published on June 10, 2025.

The study

The 50 participants (average age of 32, average BMI of 24) were provided meal plans for a eucaloric diet that contained either 3 or 6 meals per day.

At the end of each intervention, the participants completed a 6.5-hour laboratory visit, during which subjective appetite and hormone levels were assessed. While at the lab, the participants in the higher meal frequency group ate meals every 2 hours (4 meals total), and the participants in the lower meal frequency group ate meals every 4 hours (2 meals total). The interventions were separated by a 14-day washout period.

Levels of ghrelin (a hunger-promoting hormone) and peptide YY (a hunger suppressing hormone) were higher in the higher meal frequency condition than in the lower meal frequency condition. However, hunger, fullness, and desire to eat did not differ between conditions.
