Associations between the intake of B vitamins and neuropsychiatric disorders Original paper

In this meta-analysis of 332 Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses in 210,868 participants, the intake of certain B vitamins was associated with the risk of some neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs), but the overall B vitamin intake was not.

This Study Summary was published on April 18, 2025.

The study

Vitamin B6, folic acid, and vitamin B12 intake (excluding supplement intake) were estimated from dietary recalls. The genes used in the MR analysis were generally associated with both the metabolism of B vitamins and the risk of NPDs.

Vitamin B6 was protective against schizophrenia and epilepsy but was a risk factor for mania. Folic acid was protective against Alzheimer’s disease, intellectual disability and schizophrenia. Vitamin B12 was protective against autism and intellectual disability but was a risk factor for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
