Can a Mediterranean diet help with depression? Original paper
In this meta-analysis of 6 randomized controlled trials in 952 participants with major depressive disorder, a Mediterranean diet did not reduce depression symptoms or improve quality of life compared to control diets.
This Study Summary was published on March 25, 2025.
The study
The participants in the intervention group followed a Mediterranean diet with support from dietitians for periods ranging from 8 weeks to 2 years. The control groups either received general health education or followed an alternative dietary pattern.
Although the results generally leaned toward the Mediterranean diet, there were no statistically significant differences compared to the control diets (either active or passive) in terms of depression symptoms or quality of life.
The certainty of evidence was rated as very low, and the studies showed notable heterogeneity.
