The study

Both groups participated in a behavioral weight loss program that included group meetings, dietary counseling, and physical activity recommendations.

The diets were designed to have a similar weekly energy deficit. The DCR group was prescribed a daily energy deficit of 34%. The 4:3 intermittent fasting group was prescribed an 80% energy deficit on 3 nonconsecutive days per week and no dietary restrictions on the other days.

The decrease in body weight from baseline was 17 lbs (7.7 kg) in the intermittent fasting group and 10.6 lbs (4.8 kg) in the DCR group.

The intermittent fasting group also lost more fat mass (−13.2 lb vs. –8.6 lb, or –6.0 vs. −3.9 kg ) and lean mass (−4.0 vs. −1.3 lb, or −1.8 vs. −0.6 kg), but changes in cardiometabolic risk factors (e.g., blood lipids, HbA1c) did not differ between groups.
