Curcumin for improving diabetic retinopathy? Original paper
In this 12-week randomized controlled trial in 56 participants with diabetic retinopathy, supplementing with curcumin and piperine did not affect disease severity, but there were improvements in oxidative stress biomarkers.
This Study Summary was published on April 1, 2025.
The study
The participants supplemented with either 1,000 milligrams of curcumin and 10 milligrams of piperine or a placebo daily.
Compared to the placebo group, total antioxidant capacity and superoxide dismutase activity increased and malondialdehyde decreased in the curcumin group.
The severity of diabetic retinopathy was determined by the density and thickness of the small blood vessels in the retina, which was assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography.
All of the analyses were adjusted for baseline levels.
