Risk factors for Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal cancer Original paper
In this meta-analysis of observational studies, risk factors for Barrett’s esophagus (a potentially precancerous condition) included gastric reflux, tobacco smoking, and alcohol consumption. Additionally, tobacco smoking was a risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma, a type of cancer.

The study
A total of 54 studies were included (almost all case-control studies); 22 studies had a low risk of bias, 19 had a moderate risk of bias, and 13 had a high risk of bias.
The outcomes assessed were esophageal adenocarcinoma and Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that can develop into esophageal cancer.
The following 5 factors were associated with Barrett’s esophagus:
- Obesity (23% higher odds)
- Male sex (36% higher odds)
- Alcohol consumption (37% higher odds)
- Tobacco smoking (42% higher odds)
- Gastric reflux more than once a week (256% higher odds)
The only factor associated with esophageal adenocarcinoma was tobacco smoking (115% higher odds).
