Branched-chain amino acids increase muscle mass in older adults with chronic kidney disease Original paper
In this 12-week randomized controlled trial in older adults with chronic kidney disease, supplementation with leucine-enriched branched-chain amino acids increased muscle mass by 0.4 kilograms (0.88 pounds), but walking speed and grip strength remained similar to the placebo group.

The study
All of the participants (55 adults, aged 65 or older) had stage 3 or 4 chronic kidney disease and additional conditions such as hypertension and type 2 diabetes were common.
The participants took either capsules containing a total of 4.5 grams of leucine, 1.5 grams of valine, and 1.5 grams of isoleucine per day or a placebo. All of the participants received nutritional counseling with guidelines for protein intake (0.8 to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight daily).
