Can tart cherry juice help with ulcerative colitis? Original paper
In this 6-week randomized controlled trial in 35 participants with ulcerative colitis, tart cherry juice improved clinical outcomes.
This Study Summary was published on April 23, 2025.
The study
The participants drank 60 milliliters of tart cherry juice or a placebo daily.
Health-related quality of life (the primary outcome) improved in the tart cherry juice group, compared with the placebo. This improvement was clinically significant.[1]
For secondary outcomes, disease activity and fecal calprotectin improved in the tart cherry juice group, compared with the placebo group, with a large effect size reported for both outcomes. However, changes in inflammatory biomarkers (e.g., interleukin-6 and TNF-alpha), did not differ between the groups.
