Adding probiotics to an antidepressant may boost mood Original paper

In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in 44 adults with major depressive disorder, taking an antidepressant and a probiotic supplement reduced depression symptoms more than taking an antidepressant and a placebo.

This Study Summary was published on June 12, 2025.

The study

All of the participants (average age of 36; 39 women, 5 men) gradually increased to taking a 20-milligram dose of fluoxetine (aka Prozac) and were assigned to take either a probiotic or a placebo daily. The probiotic contained Lactobacillus helveticus R0052 and Bifidobacterium longum R0175 (3 billion CFU/gram).

Depression symptoms decreased by 71% in the probiotic group and by 48% in the placebo group. No differences were observed in the secondary outcomes of cortisol, adrenocorticotropic hormone, brain-derived neurotrophic factor, or dietary intake.
