Can collagen and vitamin C help with knee osteoarthritis? Original paper
In this 6-month randomized controlled trial, hydrolyzed collagen and vitamin C supplements reduced knee pain, improved knee function, and decreased inflammation in 120 participants with knee osteoarthritis.
This Study Summary was published on April 24, 2025.
The study
All of the participants (with moderate-to-severe knee osteoarthritis) took either 10 grams of hydrolyzed collagen with 80 mg of vitamin C or a placebo daily.
Two inflammatory markers were reduced with collagen supplementation: C-reactive protein and erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
The pain reduction in the collagen group was considered clinically significant.
This study was funded by the manufacturer of the supplement.
