Do bedtime snacks improve glycemic control in gestational diabetes? Original paper

In this 8-week randomized controlled trial in women in China with gestational diabetes, eating mixed nuts before bedtime did not lower fasting morning glucose (blood sugar) levels or prevent hyperglycemia after breakfast.

The study

The 62 participants (average age of 30) were 24 to 28 weeks pregnant and had no history of diabetes before pregnancy. The intervention group ate 25 grams of mixed nuts (including cashews, hazelnuts, macadamia nuts, pistachios, and walnuts) each evening within 1 hour of bedtime, in addition to their usual diets. The control group avoided evening snacks.
