Taraxacum officinale, also known as dandelion, is a vegetable that most people call a weed. Dandelion is sometimes used as a salad green, and has limited traditional use in East Asian countries. It is used around the world for its diuretic effect.
Though dandelion is ingested primarily as a diuretic, there is a lack of good human evidence for this effect.
Animal studies and in vitro evidence suggest dandelion may have a variety of other beneficial health effects, but much more research is needed to trace these effects back to individual compounds found in dandelions. Since many of the compounds found in dandelions can be found in other herbs, it is possible that other supplements may be more effective than dandelion.
Limited rodent evidence suggests dandelion may be able to ease digestion by increasing the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. Dandelion may also exert a protective effect on the pancreas. Preliminary evidence suggests dandelion may have minor antiallergenic properties, but further research is needed to confirm this effect.
Dandelion can be used in salad. About 100 g of dandelion provides about 10-15% of your daily potassium requirements, at little to no caloric intake. Supplementation of dandelion cannot be recommended at this time due to a lack of human evidence for its effects. Consuming wild dandelions is not recommended, especially those grown in urban and suburban settings, as they will have been exposed to pesticide.

About 100 g of dandelion can be using in a salad to provide 10-15% of your daily potassium requirement.
The dose above is equivalent to approximately 10g of the dry weight of the plant, assuming water content of 87-90%.
Supplementation of dandelion cannot be recommended at this time due to a lack of human evidence for its effects. Consuming wild dandelions is not recommended, especially those grown in urban and suburban settings, as they will have been exposed to pesticide.

In this randomized controlled trial, a supplement based on D-mannose improved symptom resolution in women with an uncomplicated urinary tract infection.
Quick Summary
In this randomized controlled trial, a supplement based on D-mannose improved symptom resolution in women with an uncomplicated urinary tract infection.
Background
An uncomplicated urinary tract infection (UTI) refers to a UTI with inflammation localized to the bladder. (Complicated UTIs involve infection that spreads past the bladder.) The most common cause of UTIs is Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. Antibiotics are the primary treatment for UTIs, but due to a rise in antibiotic resistance, it’s worth exploring alternative treatments.
D-mannose is a monosaccharide that is excreted in the urine and may help inhibit bacterial adhesion to the lining of the urinary tract and thus may be useful for treating UTI.
The study
In this 5-day randomized controlled trial, 70 women (average age of 34) with an uncomplicated UTI were assigned to take a D-mannose-based supplement (containing 2,000 mg of D-mannose, 1,500 mg of prebiotics, 140 mg of arabinogalactan, 100 mg of Astragalus membranaceus root extract, and 50 mg of dandelion extract) or a placebo daily. The treatments were administered along with the standard of care (decided for each participant individually).
The primary outcomes were the clinical response at the end of treatment on day 6 and at 35 days after baseline. Clinical response was defined as (i) complete resolution of symptoms or (ii) improvement of symptoms from a more severe to a less severe category. The secondary outcomes were a positive urine culture at days 6 and 35, defined as an E. coli bacteria load >105 CFU/mL.
The results
At day 6, 34% of participants in the D-mannose group had a complete resolution of symptoms, compared to 0% in the placebo group.
At day 35, 89% of participants in the D-mannose group had a complete resolution of symptoms, compared to 20% in the placebo group. Furthermore, 0% of participants in the D-mannose group had moderate or severe symptoms, whereas 26% and 11% of participants in the placebo group had moderate or severe symptoms, respectively.
At day 6, 14% of participants in the D-mannose group had a positive urine culture, compared to 86% in the placebo group.
At day 35, 0% of participants in the D-mannose group had a positive urine culture, compared to 60% in the placebo group.

Background
A number of natural bioactive compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, and/or hepatoprotective properties. These compounds include omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., EPA and DHA), curcumin, thymoquinone, glutathione, S-adenosyl-l-methionine (SAMe), artichoke extract, milk thistle extract, holy basil extract, and luteolin. Because people with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) typically display metabolic abnormalities (such as elevated levels of blood glucose, blood lipids, and inflammation), supplementation with a product containing a combination of these (and other) natural compounds may have beneficial effects in this population. This trial explored that possibility.
