In this 12-week randomized controlled trial in 36 participants who were receiving hemodialysis treatment, a synbiotics supplement generally did not improve clinical biomarkers.
Quick Summary
In this 12-week randomized controlled trial in 36 participants who were receiving hemodialysis treatment, a synbiotics supplement generally did not improve clinical biomarkers.
The study
The synbiotic supplement provided a total of 1x109 CFU of 7 species of Lactobacillus and 21 milligrams of fructooligosaccharides daily. The placebo contained no probiotics or fructooligosaccharides, but all of the other components of the supplement were the same (including 700 milligrams of inulin).
Fibrinogen decreased (improved) in the synbiotics group, compared with the placebo group. There were no differences between the groups for advanced glycation end products, blood lipids, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, or HbA1c.
The results
Although the results suggest that this particular synbiotic supplement is ineffective, other supplements could be beneficial because different probiotic strains and prebiotics provide distinct effects.[1][2]

What was studied?
The effect of supplementation with synbiotics on clinical and biochemical parameters in the context of post-COVID syndrome (also called “long COVID”).
The primary outcome was fatigue symptoms, assessed using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory (MFI-20). The secondary outcomes were long-COVID symptoms (such as lack of smell, lack of taste, body aches, and headache), postexercise malaise (discomfort), choline and creatine concentrations in the quadriceps muscle and several regions of the brain, and N-acetyl aspartate concentrations in several regions of the brain.
